Special Interest Groups

In order to engage & empower LIS Professionals, ADINET has initiated the process of starting Special Interest Groups (SIGs) in Gujarat, for all categories of Libraries viz. School, College, University, Public, Special Libraries & even for LIS Schools.

Objectives of SIGs:

  • To share ideas in creating/developing and providing innovative library services to the specialized community
  • To examine/review the status of various categories of libraries and librarians in Gujarat
  • To identify the challenges faced by the libraries in Gujarat
  • To develop a framework of competencies essential for the librarians
  • To engage the librarians in meaningful and productive activities
  • To empower librarians to connect and collaborate in professional activities
  • To provide training and internship to the fresh LIS graduates/students for skill development in specialized areas
The rationale in creating these SIGs is to bring together Librarians of each SIG, to seek an identity for themselves. These will be extremely useful platforms to do collaborative work, to share resources and will help professionals to address & overcome their challenges. It will also help them to upgrade their skills as well as to stay motivated by accessing expertise & essential resources. The Plan of Action & Outcome have been finalized.

Five Google Forms have been designed for each of these SIGs. Besides obtaining the basic data of Libraries, these Forms will help to implement the plan of action.
Few LIS Professionals have been appointed as Coordinators for each of these six SIGs.

The Coordinators of these SIGs are :

School Libraries [ASL-SIG] Ms Sangita Bhatt, Ms. Anshula Srivastava & Ms Anubha Arora.
College Libraries [ACL-SIG] Dr Dhaval Bhatt, Dr Tejas Shah, Mr Pragnesh Parekh & Dr Yogesh Parekh.
University Libraries [AUL-SIG] Dr Sheetal Tank and Dr Kaushik Rao
Special Libraries [ASPL-SIG] Dr Lalitha P. and Mr Saroj Das
Public Libraries [APL-SIG] Dr Pankaj Goswami and Ms Jayshree Joshi
Library Science Schools [ALS-SIG] Dr. Bhakti Gala and Dr. Atul Bhatt

Each of these SIGs has been divided into subgroups.
For each subgroup Co-coordinators have been nominated.

Since the data collection work of thousands of Libraries in Gujarat is a really huge task, several Library Professionals from all over Gujarat are helping us to collect the data. Hence the names of the co-coordinators are not mentioned.

School Library [ASL-SIG]:

As the number of schools in Gujarat is really large, to begin with only CBSE, ICSE & IB Schools have been covered. In order to collect data for these schools, all the schools have been sorted citywise & two representatives have been selected from each city to collect the data.

College Library [ACL-SIG]:

There are over 1000 colleges in Gujarat. They were sorted Subject Wise initially e.g. Arts, Commerce, Education & Science Colleges.
Now again these colleges have been sorted city wise, to obtain the data of colleges in each city.

University Library [AUL-SIG]:

There are almost 80 Universities in Gujarat . These have been sorted District Wise.
Eight clusters of neighboring districts have been formed to facilitate the data collection.

Public Library [APL-SIG]:

Besides thousands of Public Libraries which are handled by Directorate of Libraries in Gujarat; other Public Libraries have also been covered and sorted according to the Districts in Gujarat.

Special Library [ASPL-SIG]:

The large number of Special Libraries in Gujarat; have been sorted according to subjects - Management Libraries, Law Libraries, Health Science Libraries, Engineering & Technical Libraries., Design Libraries., Pharma Libraries and Social Science Libraries.

Again each subject library has been sorted city wise.
The process of collecting data in the Google Forms for all the five SIGs is going on and several professionals all over Gujarat are helping us in doing so.

Library Science Schools [ALS-SIG]:

A WhatsApp Group has been prepared of all LIS Teachers in Gujarat.

Two Meetings have been held, in which most of the Faculty Members were present. A Webinar will be conducted on Ethics in Work. Most of the Faculty Members have agreed to prepare, if possible, in Gujarati, teaching/learning e-content for various topics as per the Syllabi taught in the LIS Schools.
